Gravity wave momentum flux in the lower stratosphere over convection

چکیده
This work describes a method for estimating vertical fluxes of horizontal momentum carried by short horizontal scale gravity waves (Xx = 10-100 km) using aircraft measured winds in the lower stratosphere. We utilize the in situ wind vector and pressure altitude measurements provided by the Meteorological Measurement System (MMS) on board the ER-2 aircraft to compute the momentum flux vectors at the flight level above deep convection during the tropical experiment of the Stratosphere Troposphere Exchange Project (STEP-Tropical). Data from Flight 9 are presented here for illustration. The vertical flux of horizontal momentum in these observations points in opposite directions on either side of the location of a strong convective updraft in the cloud shield. This property of internal gravity waves propagating from a central source compares favorably with previously described model results.

Momentum Transport Due to a Squall Line System over the Tropical Oceans
Fast-moving squall lines observed in the tropical oceans are treated as a gravity wave generated by the latent heat release associated with deep cumulus convection. A simple two-dimensional diagnostic linear gravity wave model forced by a zonally propagating heat source is presented. The effect of cumulus friction, or momentum exchange due to cumulus convection, is included in the wave momentum...
متن کاملToward an Understanding of Vertical Momentum Transports in Cloud-System-Resolving Model Simulations of Multiscale Tropical Convection
This study examines the characteristics of convective momentum transport (CMT) and gravity wave momentum transport (GWMT) in two-dimensional cloud-system-resolving model simulations, including the relationships between the two transports. A linear group velocity criterion is shown to objectively separate CMT andGWMT. TheGWMT contribution is mostly consistent with upward-propagating gravity wave...
متن کاملGravity Waves and Ionospheric Irregularities over Tropical Convection Zones observed by GPS/MET Radio Occultation
GPS/MET observations of the tropical atmosphere of the southern hemisphere (5S to 25S) during February 1997 are analysed, when a high amount of convective tropospheric water vapor is at these latitudes. Enhanced gravity wave activity of the lower stratosphere at h=22-28 km is associated to areas of increased tropospheric water vapor pressure at h=4-6 km, regarded as a measure of tropical convec...
متن کاملSeasonal variation of equatorial wave momentum fluxes at Gadanki ( 13 . 5 ◦ N , 79 . 2 ◦ E )
The vertical flux of the horizontal momentum associated with the equatorial Kelvin and Rossby-gravity waves are estimated from the winds measured by the Indian MST radar located at Gadanki (13.5 • N, 79.2 • E) during September 1995 to August 1996 in the tropospheric and lower stratospheric regions for all four seasons. The present study shows that momentum flux values are greater during equinox...
متن کاملEffects of Internal Gravity Waves on Energy Budgets and the Vertical Transport of Angular Momentum Over Mountainous Terrain
High-resolution pictures obtained with a h a n d h el d camera during the earth-orbiting photographic mission of the Apollo 9 spacecraft provided a unique opportunity to map the areal extent of gravity waves over the southwestern United States. The gravity waves were manifested in thin layers of middleand high-cloud patterns over the rugged terrain of Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. Zonal sh...
